Construction Project
Railway Tunnel Tiergarten-Landwehr Canal
Location
  • Berlin-Tiergarten
Client
  • DB Projekt GmbH Knoten Berlin
Planning
  • IVZ - Ingenieurgemeinschaft für die Planung von Verkehrsanlagen im Zentralen Bereich Berlin (Emch und Partner, Schüssler-Plan, DE-Consult)
Investment volume
  • approx. DM 800.0 million
Construction period
  • 1998 to 2002
Contracted services for BMG
  • Section 55.8-HOAI–Property planning for engineering structures and traffic facilities
Structures constructed
  • For single track tunnel tubes in underground construction (L = 4 x 1,280 m)
Special features
  • Assembly shield (L = 8.50 m) and back-up (L = 54.00 m) with a weight of 420 t using a 1,000 t truck crane
  • Shield driving using a hydro-shield for the track area in the tunnel
  • Driving by use if fluid-supported tunnel advance, mechanic soil excavation and hydraulic soil transport
  • Driving speed achieved 6 to 20 m/day
Utilization
  • Intercity tunnel and railway station for the DB AG
Construction
  • Single wall construction (Øi/Øe = 7.90/8.70 m) with water-proof reinforced concrete block tubbing elements
  • Tubbing width (w = 1.50 m) consisting of seven segments and a key stone
  • One tubbing stone (L = 3.70 m) weighs 5.2 t, one tubbing ring (L = 48.4 m) weights 38.60 t
  • 27,300 single tubbings (equals 3,412 tubbing rings) were buílt in Neoprene ribbon in continuous slot round the tubbing to seal the joints against pressing water
  • Grade of concrete B45, Tubbing thickness d = 40 cm with reinforcement 120 kg/m³
  • Tubbings delivered as finished concrete elements in required dimensional accuracy of +/- 0,5 mm
  • Tubbings are embedded through load transfer in the soil by grouting the shield trail using mortar
  • Installation of a mass-spring-system in the rail trough plate to reduce oscillations and impact stress caused by operation in the long-distance rails
