Construction Project
North-South Connection Berlin-Starting Pit for Hydroshield
Location
  • Berlin
Client
  • DB Projekt GmbH Knoten Berlin
Planning
  • IVZ-Ingenieurgemeinschaft for the planning of transport facilities in the centre of Berlin, Emch und Berger, Schüssler-Plan, DE-Consult
Investment volume
  • approx. DM 75.0 million
Construction period
  • April 1996 to July 1997
Contracted services for BMG
  • Section 55.8 HOAI-General construction management
Structures constructed
  • Construction of a deep and low-deformation trench for reception of the later tunnel structure
  • Subterraneous curtains (T = 1.20 m) will be inserted up to 25.00 m
  • Injection anchors will be used as grouted anchor to counteract the high soil and water pressure
  • Excavators excavate the trench to the groundwater level
  • Underwater excavation with floating excavators until the bed depth is reached
  • Installation of the buoyancy anchors under water from the floating pontoon
  • Pouring concrete under water using discharge pipes reaching to the bed
  • The combination of the vertical subterraneous curtains and the concrete bed create a waterproof reinforced concrete basin
  • Once the groundwater has been pumped out of the basin, the construction of the actual structure can begin
Special features
  • A structure subject to settling requires a low-deformation trench design.
  • Counteraction of enormous bed pressures of 20 t/m² by using temporary buoyancy anchors
  • Divers check the quality of the work
Utilization
  • Railway tunnel for DB AG
Construction
  • Design as curtain-bed construction using concrete impervious to water
  • Subterraneous curtain area 13,000 m²
  • Subterraneous curtain concrete used 20,800 m³/Underwater concrete used 10,000 m³
  • Reinforcing steel used for construction 1,850 t
